How to clean stairs

Posted on Tue May 7th 2019 by James Speke

A tidy and clean staircase is not only something which should be done to keep your house looking at it’s best – a tidy and clean staircase is also a staircase which is free of risks to people travelling up and down it. As well as keeping people safe, this approach to staircase cleaning and tidying ensures that any visitor into your home is presented with a neat, clean and tidy staircase which really sets the tone for the rest of your home.

As the UK’s leading suppliers of stair parts and components – we have put together this post which details a few of the different ways in which you can keep your staircase looking its best, whilst keeping the people who use the staircase safe in the process.

Be Disciplined

Ensure that everybody in your household knows that the stairs are NOT somewhere to dump household items – stairs can very quickly, and very dangerously become the home for everything from keys to socks and pants – risking painful and dangerous falls and accidents for anyone using the staircase.

Vacuum Carpeted Stairs Weekly

Carpet on staircases can take some massive punishment, especially with people forgetting to take their shoes off when heading upstairs. Try and hoover the carpet on the stairs weekly, and if you can afford to – invest in the right attachments or a handheld hoover which makes this hoovering safe and effective. Place a lot of attention on the carpet join between the tread of the stair and the riser – as this is often where dust and grime can accumulate.

Dust Wooden Steps

Cleaning wooden steps can be done with warm soapy water, and quite often a simple dusting will more than suffice to keep wooden steps looking their best.

Dust & Polish Spindles

Dusting and polishing stair spindles and banisters can be a great way to keep your staircase looking good – do take care however, to ensure that no polish lands on wooden steps – causing a very real slip hazard.
